Dev Dipawali :13th to 16th November 2016
Dev Diwali or the “Festival of lights celebrated by the Gods” takes place in Varanasi, the oldest city in recorded history, on the banks of the Holy Ganges. Legend has it that the Gods descended to Earth on this day and conquered all evil and restored peace once again.
Dev Diwali is celebrated on Kartik Purnima (full moon) according to the Hindu calendar. On this day all the ghats of Varanasi are lit up with lamps and more are floated on the water. There is much chanting of vedic hymns amidst the tinkling of temples bells and blowing of conch shells. The atmosphere is charged with devotion and prayer.
Varanasi is transformed on this day in the evening when its ghats are lit up with thousands of lamps and drums and chanting reverberates across the expanse of the Holy Ganges.
